"Resolution & Adventure" Silver Medal 1772 For Captain Cook's Second Voyage Head of George III, Reverse the Two Ships Heading for the Horizon. 44mm. Struck from the 2nd. (New) Die after the First Die cracked striking the majority of the Bronze Medals. Also known as the "Otaheite" Medal, the original order from Sir Joseph Banks was for 106 Specimens.Interestingly it states on the Medal "Sailed from England March MDCCLXXII" (1772) but the Expedition suffered a number of delays and did not in fact set sail until the 13th July 1772. This almost certainly confirms the Silver medals were struck prior to the voyage but were apparently not taken with Cook and were not distributed as the Bronze Medals were. Nicely Toned. Very RARE ..... gVF
